What, you thought we’d leave our runner-up for the best game of E3 2007 off of this list? The Fallout series is one of the most-beloved RPG franchises of all time but it’s been ages since we’ve seen a new entry. This is probably due to the fact that there was a fair bit of legal wrangling going on, with the Fallout license finally ending up in the collective lap of Bethesda Softworks, creators of the excellent Elder Scrolls series. Although we’ve only seen the game in action once (actually, we saw the same demo a few times), this is definitely near the top of our team’s Most Wanted list.
Rather than simply thrusting the player into the game as an adult, the folks at Bethesda decided to introduce our hero to the game world the same way as in real life: through birth. After being born, you’ll learn the skills you need to survive, as well as cement your core attributes and characteristics. Did we mention that this all takes place in an expansive underground bomb shelter?
Upon making your way out of Vault 101 you’ll find yourself in a world ravaged by nuclear war, where only the strong survive. The fact that many of these strong folks are hideous mutants makes the going a bit tougher than usual. You’ll need to battle your way through this toxic wasteland to find your father, all while meeting a variety of offbeat supporting characters that want your help, your gear, or (more often than not) your head.
It’s the end of the world as we know it… and Fallout 3 makes us feel fine!
