Desslock talks Fallout 3 part 3

A quick but revealing post from Desslock at the QuarterToThree forum:

Can you aim for specific appendages outside of VATS, or what?

Yes, and you can inflict the same damaging effects (like hitting an ant’s antennae to confuse/enrage it and cause it to attack its buddies). It’s just much easier to do through VATS mode, since you have a greater chance to hit with a shot aimed through VATS.

Still no comments on the impossibility of shooting a rat in the groin.

  1. that goes directly against what Bartoneus said about shots outside of RT being rolled for center mass no matter where you aimed at. Unless there really is a penalty on that roll in real time this helps the twitch gamer.

  2. I think I am beginning to understand VATS now. It is basically the aimed shot option in FO1 & 2. So basically, if you don’t use VATS you are essentially doing either “rapid-shot” “burst-shot” or the other equivilent modes in FO where less AP is required to make the shot (in this case no AP is spent, but nor would you gain any AP).

    sample of combat:

    More Turn base like:
Player> aim shot a rat, spent all his AP
Player> start to run around avoiding the rat, while accumlating AP.
Rat> chase down the player, while its AP fills.
Player> enough AP is accumlated, and aim shot the Rat again, and kills it.

    For the FPS kiddies:
Player> runs and guns the rat
Rat> chase the player and dodge the bullet (maybe?)
Player finally kill the rat, and depending on his skill and luck, he may or may not have wasted more ammo to kill the rat.

  3. Now having typed all that, I am beginning to see a interesting possibility for melee combat which would make it worthwhile, should Bethsoft decide to do things this way.

Basically, everyone would have 2 types of AP. Your normal AP, that can be spent on shooting and meleeing, this type is capped by your stats.
Once that normal AP is filled, you can also accumlate special “melee AP,” which is capped by the melee stat of the player/mob (this is in addition to the normal AP, so no matter what your melee skill is, you will get some extra AP to spend should you choose to melee).

Now in the sample combat scenerio I described above, if the player instead of shooting, decide to move around while closing in on the rat, he will be able to accumlate more AP. And once he close in on the rat he would be able to execute more melee attacks.
All the while, increased AP give the player higher chance of dodging the attacks from the rat.

  4. right AP accumulates while you are moving, but if you are a FPS kiddy and shooting at the same time, your AP will also be depleting.

  5. He’s a nice guy Morbus, he genuinely believes in the Bethesda vision for Fallout 3, it’s not just a case of being bought with gifts.

I didn’t say otherwise. I once believed Oblivion was one of the best RPG’s in existence too… I don’t think I was a “bad guy” back then, and I certainly wasn’t bought with gifts…

  6. I still think Oblivion is a great RPG. Where does that place me? 🙂
I think VATS is going to be a large make or break issue for FO3. If Bethesda does it right it will be a key factor in bridging the old turn-based RPG with the new real-time RPG. If they do it wrong it will wreck the game. Then we will not have to ask ourselves the naughing question anymore “Why do kiddie shooter have all the best graphics?”

Probably in the uninformed part of the crowd, just like myself back then. Now I’m only on the mildly uninformed part 😛

I disagree. It’s not only VATS what Fallout 3 should be about. It’s about the setting, and bethesda is raping it… And about the tone, and bethesda is changing it… And about the freedom and multiple colors on choices. Ehehe, bethesda chose the “shades of gray” thing, which is simply dull. I still have nightmare with todd saying that “shades of gray”…

  8. I agree that FO is not just about VATS. I agree that setting and tone are extremely important. I just don’t think Bethesda is destorying them. We don’t have any real proof of that yet.

  9. to be fair, I think “bought with gift” is kinda strong phrase. Like I said in the Ars Tech article, things are not as black/white as we make it to be.
Put yourself in the position of a game journalist that makes little to no money from the site that he runs, but have to please his readership.
How many trips are you willing to make using your own cash, before you either give up, or start asking the readers for donation?

Ah! So even though you can’t see any proof of anything, you still think they are not raping it, is that right? Why do you think so?

Me, on the other hand, I see quite a few things that PROVE they don’t care about Fallout’s spirit. It’s very obvious actually. I don’t know if FO3 will be a good RPG or not, what I DO know is that, as it has been shown, it will not be a good Fallout game. Plain and simple.

Well, that is quite true, actually. The problem here is whether you would let your opinion change because of those “gifts”, or whatever you’d like to call them (because they actually aren’t gifts)…

  11. Yeah, though being human as we all are, it is hard to not be at least a little affected by gifts. In fact, even if the journalists aren’t affected, his readers may view his opinions different just because they expected the gifts to (or to not ) have affected the journalist’s opinion 😦

I am all for cutting the unnecessary game developement cost though. And I am all for supporting journalists (via donation and what not) that I respect. In a ideal world I’d love to see the removal of the “corporate” crap from game development… (what happened to “just a bunch of guys that loves to play games and make games…”)

  12. Wait a minute, when did I say realtime shots were percentage based? (I actually forgot where/if I said it) No matter what we don’t really know definitively what happens out of real time yet (unless Desslock saw more then just the demo).

  13. Here’s what I said:

“Correct that VATS is a pause to aim idea, but from what I saw and heard at the event the Realtime play is like any other realtime game with shooting, if you aim and actually hit the head the same effects would apply as a called shot.”

It doesn’t read as clearly as I’d have liked, but I was saying the exact same thing as Desslock.

The key line being, “the Realtime play is like any other realtime game with shooting”

  14. Well that puts us right back where we started. Now knowing if FO3 will use stats for hiting in realtime like a good RPG should or rewarding kiddie twitch play.
I hope they don’t blow it.
@Morbus, you make a valid point about the difference between a good RPG and a true follow-up to FO. No matter what Bethesda does they will not make the whole fanbase happy. The problem is that they are being compared not to the reality of FO but to the memory of FO. A game they can’t win.

  15. The system as we understand it would only be “rewarding” twitch play if it were multiplayer. And as I stated, if you’re plugging away at an ant’s antennae in real time you’ll run out of ammo real fast and not get the results you’re looking for. If your character’s agility and gun skills are raised, and you use VATS, you’ll have a much better time of dealing with it then simply shooting in real time.

If you think about it, it’s really rewarding RP play.

  16. One More Tedious Sports Analogy

Actually an old joke: “”went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out “”.

Similar events might mature from gaming a hypothetical FPS system with action rpg aspirations.

“Between the running and gunning, this puzzling role playing fell out”.

Stats that have ‘real time’ relevance in conflict resolution AND the rpg interludes, merely a mini game or part of the whole experience?

What will be the game and what will be the *game* with in the game?

Perhaps, Bethesda can balance the ‘*game* with in the game’ by juggling the –mini– games.

Role playing – problem solving … puzzles – chess like quality time, that will seque the action immersion – defacto altered state – of real time FPS.

    Crafted character the dynamic link.

FO magic not in the additive math or engineered structure of “should be’s”,
FO physics involves other dimensions beyond 2D or 3D whether in sequential or real time.
Some wave / particle like dichotomy lurks in a quantum mechanical Wonderland, FO the happy accident.

    Fo3 and teh funni.

Can only hope, on one hand, that Bethesda is saving their best and brightest humor for the -wedding night-,
but, for hygiene’s sake, this H2O ”potty humor” inspires one to wear latex on any other exposed appendage.

This mini nuke launcher might have come right out of Wily E. Coyote’s Road Runner catching kit. Warner Brother’s “”That’s All Folk’s!””.

Even teh humor has it’s consequences.

    Game With In The Game

Consider the possible function of playing a RPG mini game on FO3’s Pipboy. 2D, iso-view,TB. Vault boy cartoon graphics OK.
Use to watch ‘historical reenactment”, talk with – fight with Beth dev straw entities, and / or game out possible attack – negotiation strategies for the *real world* FO3 FPS real time.

All above or one ‘special’ encounter …

Teh Nasty, in yo’ fanboi face, ‘in’ joke potential, at least may leave one with a clean ”other” hand.
