NMA Brotherhood of Steel Contest

From No Mutants Allowed:

A little while ago, Bethesda released a developer diary describing for the first time the background events leading up to persistent Brotherhood activity in war-torn Washington D.C. Opinions on the piece were vocal and divided. Some thought it was a reasonable take showing that even Elders of the Brotherhood can undergo character growth in the face of wasteland realities; others decried it as a hamfisted retooling out of step with Fallout lore. Obviously such an argument can have no definitive resolution.

But why leave it there? We at NMA invite you to don your creative hat and present your own vision of the Brotherhood, where they are now and how they got there. Your assignment is to write your own version of this story, to tell it the way you would want it to be told, to set the Brotherhood up for the game you would want to play.

Your entry must be centred on the premise that the Brotherhood of Steel, or some group using their name and trappings, are operating on the East Coast. Who are they? What do they represent? What’s their history, what state do we find them in, what’s their agenda? We’re looking for stories that are ambitious, well-considered, well-written, consistent and believable.

All surrounding details are mutable. You can but do not have to refer to other aspects of the setting and plot of Fallout 3 that have been revealed or hinted at, or try to guess at undisclosed plot points. You can frame your piece however you like, but don’t forget about the content.

To fuel your creative efforts at fan writing, we’ll be offering up a desirable fan prize. The winner will receive a poster-sized print of any one art piece by renowned fan artist Defonten: City Ruins, Cafe of Broken Dreams or Brand New Reno.

For the rest of the details, the rules and where to submit to, go to:
NMA Brotherhood of Steel Writing Contest.

Also, let me take this chance to remind everyone that stuff like the Fallout 3 preview and this only happen thanks to your generous donations. NMA is a non-profit site, we do not make money from our banners. So thank you, Mr Donating Man!

Fallout 3 Not For Kids

What They Play is a new gaming site for parents:

What They Play is all about videogames, and it’s for parents just like you. We’ll help you understand everything you need to know about the games your kids want to play, and bring you friendly, helpful, unbiased information about the content and the experiences that videogames provide.

What do they say about Fallout 3?

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, Fallout 3 is an action role-playing game produced by the same team responsible for the extremely popular Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The story tells of the inhabitant of a fallout shelter in Washington D.C. who learns that his father has left the shelter, and ventured into the wasteland. The ensuing story sees the player attempting to track down his father while battling with mutants and strange creatures and unraveling the mystery of his father’s actions. All previous games in the Fallout series have been rated “M” by the ESRB, with “Blood and Gore” and “Strong Language” prominently featured. Based on early looks at Fallout 3, it seems likely it will be similarly endowed.

More Fallout 3 on the Gaming Media

More Fallout 3 tidbits from the gaming media, first on the Eight Games for 2008 feature at Gametap:

Why It Made the List: Bethesda’s smash hit The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivions proved that hardcore PC franchises can also be successful on consoles. This year the developer is looking to repeat that success with a series that they’ve inherited from now-defunct publisher Black Isle, with the third entry in the Fallout series. Fallout 3 is a sprawling action RPG set in a postapocalyptic world; the protagonist (which you’ll create yourself) is living in a bomb shelter in the Washington, D.C. area when the father disappears. As in Oblivion, choices you make will affect the arc of the entire game. For example, early on you’ll have the choice to nuke another town; however, if you decide to do that, later on in the game, you won’t be able to visit that town or do any of the quests from it, because it won’t be there.

Next a preview at RPGFan:

Fallout 3 is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2008. It aims to please veteran Fallout fans with its use of classic Fallout gameplay systems, while also looking to gain a new constituent of fans via the enhancements afforded by new generation hardware. Fallout 3 is slated for a fall 2008 US release.

Fallout Protection

Fallout protection: what to know and do about nuclear attack is a 1961 pamphlet that is a must for any Fallout fan and Fallout games developer to get into the spirit of the “terror from above” era. Highly recommended, a nice find by Lt. Col. Gonzalez at NMA.
