Get Carter: Inside the Vault

On the Bethsoft blog we have the Inside the Vault feature with Fallout 3 producer Gavin “kathode” Carter:

What’s your job at Bethesda?
I’m the lead producer on Fallout 3. The easiest way to describe it is to think of it as more or less “Head of Communications” for Fallout as far as the development team goes. My job involves working with our department producers and leads to communicate task requirements, schedules, and ongoing status updates to the team, along with making sure everyone has everything they need to do their job efficiently.

What would you say is your personal favorite game of all time?
Karnov! I poured some serious hours into that fire-breathing Russian. Seriously though, this is a tough question because there are so many games that I enjoyed tremendously over the years. The ones that I remember playing the life out of are games like Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (the American numbers), Cybernator, the Might and Magic Xeen and Heroes games, Master of Orion 2, the first two Quest for Glory games, and Pool of Radiance. The games that influenced how I think about making games run more along the lines of Ultima 4-7, Wing Commander 1 and 2, Baldur’s Gate 2, X-Com, Blade Runner, and a couple little-known cultish games called Fallout and Wasteland.

He is also one of the three Beth devs that posted at least once in the comments of this blog, so he must be a nice, educated and sexy guy.

Jerry Goes to MTV

From Kotaku:

Jerry Bruckheimer and MTV have signed a deal whereby Bruckheimer will set up a gaming studio with the goal of making “new, original” titles (ie not games based on Bruckheimer’s films). Speaking about the move, Bruckheimer says:

Video games represent a new and innovative medium for what we’ve always tried to do, which is to tell great stories. But this medium is unique in that it gives the player control over how those stories unfold. I look forward to working with MTV Games to create new original game stories, always looking for ways to innovate the medium.

It’s unclear just how much involvement Bruckheimer will have with the actual development of the games, but from the sounds of things he’ll be working on at least the initial stages of the creative process, as well as overseeing the formation of his studio.

Does this means he will step down from his position as a member of the Board of Directors at Zenimax Media Inc., the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, makers of Fallout 3, or will he keep the job?

Worpress and Fallout

bosneck2.jpg

A few tidbits from Worpress.com blogs, first the top five most wanted RPGs for RPGRealm feature Fallout 3:

Assuming no minor disasters strike the development of Bethesda’s latest, the third installment in one of the most popular RPG franchises of all time also arrives this year. The Oblivion developer seems to be keeping tight lipped about whats going on in this game, but hey it’s Fallout, whats not there to be excited about as we get set to enter the apocalyptic world for another time.

RPG Replay has a journal of the author’s return to Fallout:

So I’m now playing Fallout for the third time. But I haven’t played it at all for almost 10 years so I’ve forgotten much of it. The first two times through the game I was very focused on making an uber-character so I spent a lot of time researching the “perfect build”. I ended up making a high-perception, lucky sniper and basically kicked ass through the whole game. I didn’t want to do that again so I rolled up a completely different kind of character.

This should be fun.
